New facility for aircraft engines

first_img29 November 2004Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin opened Turbomeca Africa’s new manufacturing and maintenance facility adjacent to Johannesburg International Airoport on Friday. The new facility will manufacture gearboxes and civil and military helicopter engines.Turbomeca Africa is a joint venture formed two years ago by South African arms manufacturer Denel and French group Turbomeca, a subsidiary of Snecma. The company manufacturers engines for both domestic firms and international companies such as Rolls-Royce and General Electric, and gives support to repairs and overhauls of civil and military helicopter engines in sub-Saharan Africa.Denel owns 49% of Turbomeca Africa, while the French group owns the remaining 51%.Turbomeca Group chairman Emeric d’Arcimoles said it was a vote of confidence that Turbomeca France was transferring its workload to Turbomeca Africa. He said that engines from the French and British ministries of defence would be overhauled in South Africa from 2005, and that engines for Swedish and Malaysian military aircraft would also be exported by Turbomeca Africa.“We are in the process of re-employing additional competency at the right place to support the growing 2005 demand from Snecma Group, international markets for manufacturing, repair and overhaul, and from the South African Air Force”, d’Arcimoles said.Erwin said the establishment of the new facility was in line with the government’s plan to expand South Africa’s aerospace capabilities and gain entry into the global environment. The venture was also part of the government’s initiative to restructure state-owned enterprises and strengthen their global competitiveness by allying them with foreign partners.“Its an important area for us … to begin to invest in new technology so that we develop our capacity to export”, Erwin said. “We are confident that once we form partnerships with foreign companies, we will attract more foreign partners.”Denel CEO Victor Moche said the new facility would be geared to become a “centre of excellence for engine manufacturing … We want to achieve a standard and be at a stage where the world knows that certain engines are made only in South Africa”.According to Business Day, Denel was recently awarded a US$2-million contract by European military aircraft manufacturer BAE Systems to supply aircraft components for the production of Hawk jets for India’s airforce.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

15 Years Later, Reddit Could Be the Next Big Thing in Marketing

first_imgBrad AndersonEditor In Chief at ReadWrite The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Trends Driving the Loyalty Marketing Industry Digital Marketing Jobs in the Government Sector “Anyone here regret working in marketing?” A Reddit post asking this exact question is just a small piece of a growing pile of evidence: Marketers are finally infiltrating this under-the-brand-radar social media platform. And why wouldn’t they? Thousands of posts like this one spark lively online conversation among Reddit users, Redditors, every day, on a platform where anyone can share virtually anything — videos, images, questions, musings, analyses — often with a community of like-minded people who also have a unique take on that specific thing.Career satisfaction notwithstanding, marketers who continue to ignore Reddit as an advertising medium will probably end up regretting it.Reddit’s New Marketing AllureIndeed, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and his team are working hard to lure advertisers to their platform, and major agency holding companies are now giving more credence to the notion that the site may provide a viable alternative to the duopoly of Google and Facebook. The site boasts 330 million active monthly users, making the self-proclaimed “Front Page of the Internet” the third-most-visited website in the U.S.Most of those 330 million are male, college-educated, and under 35, a user demographic that’s unique in the social media world, in part because a lot of Redditors aren’t on other social platforms. Marketers are also attuned to the fact that these users are, on average, far more engaged than users of other platforms and tend to make — and spend — more money than the average user on other social sites.Yet demographics aren’t the only thing that makes Reddit unique. As many new Redditors will tell you, navigating the site can be tricky at first. It comes with its own language and a unique system for rewarding site contributions, which can lead to a flood of questions for first-time users. Fortunately, answers aren’t hard to come by: All you have to do is ask.Big advertisers now say that clients are asking about the platform with greater frequency, and the nearly 15-year-old company seems poised to be the next big thing in marketing. So if you’re a marketer looking to dive into Reddit, here are three tips that could help you.1. Be helpful, and you’ll earn good karma. When Redditors post content or comments that other users appreciate via “upvoting,” they gain karma — the social currency that powers the site. Conversely, contributions that others view as detracting from the larger conversation will get downvoted, and thus karma can disappear just as easily.Brands that are new to the site should make a concerted effort to organically increase their “karmic score” by posting comments and links of value to other users; this will reflect a genuine effort to interact with the community in a meaningful way. It takes planning and thoughtfulness, but the payoff can be worth the effort. You won’t gain any special privileges, but you’ll be viewed as more credible, and your posts are more likely to garner attention.2. Find your community.Reddit’s active users tend to subscribe to a variety of communities, called subreddits, that align with their individual interests. Brands that have something to say about a particular topic should aim to be active within those smaller communities. Redditors are often eager to learn, and one of the best ways to educate and inform is through video, a favored medium on the platform.Hope Horner, CEO of video production company Lemonlight Media, stresses that on Reddit, brands should aim to be valuable rather than promotional when sharing any sort of media. “Reddit users are especially sensitive to advertising, so don’t post overtly promotional videos and expect nice comments,” Horner says. “Instead, pay attention to the preferences of the subreddit communities you want to target, and then participate in the conversation organically.”Whether on the home page or within a subreddit (or even within a conversation beneath a particular post), the platform’s scrolling content feed makes it ideal for posting GIFs. Capitalize on this by distilling the most engaging sections of your video down to 15 seconds or fewer and posting the clip to your community. Just don’t spam.3. Answer anything.Reddit offers brands opportunities for truly authentic engagement in a different format than other platforms. One of the broader subreddit categories, notated as /r/AMA, allows Redditors to create an “Ask Me Anything,” which invites other users to do exactly that. Celebrities, politicians, executives, and other public figures have used this outlet to connect with users in an authentic way and provide much-appreciated transparency. Some brands have started experimenting with the format as well. Audi, for instance, hosted a live AMA series complete with celebrity appearances and high-performance vehicles. Dubbed “Think Faster: The World’s Fastest AMA,” the series worked because it didn’t get too promotional. Rather than place the focus on its products, Audi made sure to give the spotlight to its celebrity guests, who attracted plenty of attention for the brand.Marketers still face some interesting obstacles to using Reddit effectively as an ad platform. Karma can disappear quickly, subreddits can be tough to break into, and AMAs can go horribly wrong. Still, the site’s user base represents a potential gold mine for many brands, and its leadership is clearly willing to help brands that are ready to start experimenting with the platform. Now might just be the perfect time.Additional Reading: Reddit Ads vs. Quora Ads – The $2.500 Experiment Related Posts Brad is the editor overseeing contributed content at ReadWrite.com. Sport soft and pretty skin

first_imgI have severe cracks on my heels. Even regular pedicures don’t help. What’s the cause and what can I do? -Deepa, HyderabadCracked heels are a problem for those who have naturally dry skin. The thickened dry skin around the heel that we call callus usually cracks due to mechanical factors that put increased pressure on that area (eg. the way you walk).Other factors include: prolonged standing; being overweight; open sole shoes; medical conditions like autonomic neuropathy (in diabetics). Skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema also cause dryness. To get rid of the ugly cracks, wash feet with warm water and soap, twice a day. Scrub the heels and soles with a gentle scrubber or pumice stone after lathering up with soap. Massage with moisturising cream after washing your feet just before hitting the bed and wear socks.I am 24 years old and have dry skin. Can face washes dry out my skin further? Should I use cleansing milk instead? -Chandra, KolkataDry skin tends to be thinner and more susceptible to rashes, especially from harsh cleansers. It’s important to find a cleanser that removes dirt and make-up thoroughly. Cleansing milks are modified moisturiser formulations without surfactants-the active cleaning ingredients of soaps and face washes-which remove dust and grime effectively. You need to use cleansing milk if you are exposed to pollution, dust, etc., for more than half an hour every day and also use make-up. The best way is to put cleanser on a soft facial tissue and clean your skin thoroughly. Finish by washing your face with warm water and a gentle face wash. Try: Toleriane Fluid, Toleriane by La Roche-Posay, Cetaphil Cleansing Lotion and Uriage Crme Lavante.advertisementDr Rekha Sheth is a leading cosmetic dermatologist. Indian rower Dushyant Chauhan clinches bronze at Asian Games

first_imgDushyant Chauhan won a bronze medal to take India’s tally to 12 medals at the ongoing Asian GamesRower Dushyant Chauhan was the lone bright spot after the shooters drew a blank as India managed just one bronze medal to slip to the 14th position in overall standings on the fifth day of competitions in the 17th Asian Games on Wednesday.Dushyant was the only athlete to manage a podium finish as he grabbed a bronze in the men’s lightweight single sculls event on what turned out to be a mixed day for the Indian contingent. The strong shooting squad, which had accounted for the bulk of medal collection so far, drew a blank today which led to India dropping one place in the medal table. With the addition of just one bronze today, India took their tally to 12 (1 gold, 1 silver, 10 bronze). Powerhouse China continued to lead the pack with 99 medals(50-25-24) followed by hosts South Korea with 70 medals(24-23-23) and Japan’s 64(18-23-23).The badminton and squash teams had a good day in their respective matches but the women’s hockey team lost 1-2 to China in a preliminary match.Early in the day, Dushyant, hailing from Haryana and belonging to the Bengal Engineering Group in Roorkie, led from the 500m till the last 200m in the 2000m race before strong northerly winds and rain put paid to his gold medal hopes as he fell behind two others and finished third by clocking 7:26.57.Chauhan was second behind gold-medallist Lok Kwan Hai by just under two seconds in the first 500m and then caught up with his rival before overtaking him in the course of the next 500m and looked assured of a gold before inclement weather hampered his chances.advertisementHe not only lost the gold medal, but also the silver as the host country’s Lee Hakbeom, who was third with 500m left, also surged past the Indian rower to clinch the second spot in 7:25.95.It was the first medal of the day after a fruitless stint at the shooting range for India and the 10th bronze in the Games. After scooping six medals, including a gold won by Jitu Rai, on the first four days of the Asian Games, Indian shooters misfired at the Ongnyeon pistol and rifle range here.last_img read more

Tweet Globally, Get Found Locally

first_imgWith around 21 million unique visitors to Twitter each month, Twitter is quickly gaining traction with small businesses. However, some local businesses are wondering if such a global audience is worth engaging with.  Last week, Deb Ward, a local business owner and Inbound Marketing Certified Professional, posted a thread to the inboundmarketing.com forum asking how she could localize her business’ tweets to a certain geographic location.  While it is not necessary to limit your tweeting so that only certain people in your area can see them, you CAN make your business’s location highly visible on Twitter, thus attracting more people to your brand and generating a network in your area. Here are a few ways to do this: 1. Include Your Location in Your Bio Utilize the 160-character bio each Twitter account has to describe your business and what town you hail from. Your business’s profile will then show up in Twitter’s search results for that area which will help you get found more easily.  You can also register your business on Twellow,  the yellow pages for Twitter, to make it easier for consumers to find you.  2. Follow People in Your Area and Your Industry Start following people from your area. Twitter best practices suggest that you start following people to increase the likelihood that they will follow you back. Twitter users can search for keywords on Tweet Scan to reach new audiences and to learn what these consumers want to know about in your industry. You can also search for the location of Twitter users with HubSpot’s Twitter Grader tool.  3. Tweet About Your LocationMake sure a good portion of your Tweets include geographically specific information — maybe town names, local landmarks or sports teams. If you figure out what people in your area are talking about on Twitter, then add to that conversation in a constructive manner, you’ll generate a lot of local followers. 4. Get Visible Lastly, geotweet. This application from Schmap produces a link to map with an icon pointing to your business and also allows users to rate the business on a 5 star scale.  Encourage fans of your business on Facebook or other social media sites to tweet the map and rate your business to create buzz.  Finally, above all else, don’t be spammy!  Just because you are following people does not mean you can message them every five minutes to go to your restaurant, bookstore, or hardware shop. Remember to keep your tweets interesting and relevant to your target audiences to get people to continue to follow you.  Tweet about promotional offerings or upcoming events that you are hosting and/or that pertain to your industry.  If you create content on a blog, tweet about it to drive visitors to your site.   Combine your geo-targeted efforts with thought leadership in your industry to get your target audience engaged while remaining relevant to the rest of the Twittersphere as well.      Twitter for Business Kit Learn how to use Twitter to get noticed in Social Media and spread news about your company.Download the free kit to learn how to get started with Twitter and use it to help your company get found online!
