Young Reggae Boyz lose to USA

first_imgJamaica’s Under-17 Reggae Boyz went down 5-0 to the United States in their opening CONCACAF Championships game at the Estadio Maracan· de Panam· on Sunday. The Andrew Edwards-coached team held their opponent scoreless for the first-half despite giving up a 20th-minute penalty, which was saved by goalkeeper Tajay Griffths. For the remainder of the half, it was the Jamaican captain, Griffiths, who kept the team in the game up to the interval with a string of brilliant saves. However, after the break, the floodgates opened with Chris Durkin finding the opener for the Americans with a header from a corner in the 52nd minute.NOTHING COULD BE DONEThe Americans kept the Jamaicans on the back foot and Griffiths continued to be the only reason the Jamaicans did not fall further behind, but there was nothing he could do when Tim Weah struck again in the 77th minute.Three minutes from time, Josh Sargant made it 3-0 when he snuck between Kendall Edwards and Griffiths to toe the ball into an unguarded net. It didn’t take long for the Jamaicans to fall further behind as, a minute later Ayo Akinola broke through and fired a fourth past Griffiths before putting the game to bed with another late strike in time added on.Mexico and El Salvador were down to play the other game in the group. The Jamaicans will take on El Salvador in their next game, which is a must win, on Wednesday.last_img read more
