Keanu in the MCU? He does know kung fu from his Matrix days, after all.Pain heals, and chicks dig scars, but glory lasts forever, Keanu Reeves once told us in The Replacements. Sounds like the perfect motto for a Marvel superhero. And Reeves, who’s having a most excellent and not at all bogus 2019, could join that super-powered universe. A reporter for CNET sister site ComicBook.com asked Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige if the company was planning anything involving Reeves, and indeed, strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”We talk to him for almost every film we make,” Feige said. “I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it.”Which hero would he play? Due to Reeves’ love of motorcycles, some suggest Ghost Rider. Failed IAS aspirant enjoys VIP perks for 18 months security breach at

first_imgRepresentational imageCCO Public domainA woman left senior police officials scratching their heads after she posed as a civil servant for 18 months just to enjoy the perks which came with the position. She was also assigned a security detail.Zoya Khan and her husband were arrested for conning the police in and around Delhi, such as Noida, Gurugram, Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Moradabad. The duo has been married for six years. Zoya’s husband quit his job as a banker to study for the civil services exam. Zoya, on the other hand, had attempted the exam in 2007. However, she still wanted to enjoy the VIP perks that civil administrators enjoy. The police grew suspicious when Zoya called SSP Vaibhav Krishna of Gautam Buddh Nagar and demanded to know why there was a delay in sending police escort. India Today reports that the police’s suspicion grew with the phone call and ordered an enquiry and a raid of Zoya’s apartment.During the raid of the three-bedroom apartment, the police recovered fake IDs, two laptops, two walkie-talkies, four android mobile phones, one fake pistol and two luxury car –a black Mahindra XUV 500 with a blue beacon and grey Mercedes. Some of the fake IDs of Zoya showed her as a UNSC officer and also a US diplomat in Afghanistan.Zoya had information on important political rallies in Delhi-NCR region Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing a public meeting in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.Zoya’s planner showed information on political rallies in Delhi. The investigating officer said the planner had information on the dates of the political rallies in and around Delhi-NCR region.”A planner has been recovered from her residence that mentions the dates of a few political rallies in Delhi-NCR. Even on her laptop, these dates are marked,” an investigating official was quoted as saying by India Today. He added, “A few photographs of top politicians in a separate folder on her laptop also raised suspicion about her vested interests.”Due to the position and power of the political leaders whose information Zoya stored, a thorough probe was conducted to make sure that she is not a threat to the politicians and the country. The report further states that when the police went through her call logs, they discovered that she used to call SSPs and pretended to be the Personal Assistant to Joint Secretary (Foreign) to get her work done. She used an app which helped her convert her voice to a male one.The media reports also said that during Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Meerut last week, she was given a security detail. In fact, she was also part of PM Modi’s security team. This is seen as a major breach of security. However, SSP Krishna said that the reports were false. “No evidence of these two arrested accused going to the PM’s rally in Meerut. The so-called ‘Afghanistan’ connection has not been found. Please do not sensationalise things. This is a cheating/forgery case only,” Krishna wrote on Twitter.last_img read more

133000 Rohingyas to be relocated by 31 March

first_imgIn this file photo taken on 28 November 2017, Rohingya Muslim refugees wait to be called to receive food aid of rice, water and cooking oil in a relief centre at the Kutupalong refugee camp in Cox`s Bazar. AFPThe Bangladesh government is working on relocating as many as 133,000 members of the Rohingya families by 31 March to safer places to protect them from natural calamities during the impending monsoon.“We are to shift 25,000 Rohingya families to safer zones as monsoon is approaching with cyclone, landslides and other natural calamities as usual during the monsoon,” disaster management and relief ministry secretary Md Shah Kamal told BSS on Monday. He said the government along with other international aid providing organisations is constructing temporary shades, latrines and other necessary facilities at safer places, where the Rohingyas would be relocated. The south-eastern part of Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh witnessed surges of forcibly displaced Myanmar people, who were pushed into Bangladesh when the Myanmar military launched a barbaric crackdown with supports of majority Buddhist monks in the Rakhine state. Shah Kamal said the government would introduce a community radio on Rohingya language in Cox’s Bazar area for easy communication of information at the Rohingya shelter camps being constructed there. “There are 17 community radios working in the areas to communicate information through the local language among the inhabitants of the areas,” he said. The secretary also said the government has constructed roads and set up power lampposts in the areas for easy movement of aid and other people.Officials said the government constructed shelter camps for the Rohingyas on 3,000 acres of land beside the Kutupalang frontier camp to accommodate the Rohingyas. The government earlier had allocated 2,000 acres of land, now increased to 3,000 acres, for proper accommodation of the increased number of Rohingyas. Some 150,000 sheds were constructed in the area to accommodate the Rohingyas. In addition to this, the government constructed nine-kilometre-long electricity lines in the extension areas of the Rohingya camps. Moreover, 52,500 additional latrines were constructed in the camp areas.last_img

This 89YearOld Is Walking To Washington

first_img Share CHRISTOPHER CONNELLY/KERA NEWSOpal Lee will turn 90 on her walk to the nation’s capital. An unusual journey began in Fort Worth last week. An 89-year-old woman named Opal Lee started a walk to the White House. Her goal: Make Juneteenth a national day of observance.Listen to the KERA News story.Juneteenth marks the day that word arrived in Texas that slavery had ended. It was some 2 and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.Lee is a long-time civil rights activist. She says that, for years, people have tried unsuccessfully to get Juneteenth to be observed by the federal government, so she figured she’d do something unexpected.“I thought maybe, if an old lady started out, somebody would take notice,” she said as she started her walk at Baker Chapel AME Church in East Fort Worth. “And maybe the president and Congress would say we don’t want that woman dying on our watch, get on up here so she can go home.”Forty-five states recognize Juneteenth, which is celebrated on June 19. And while Congress observes the day, Juneteenth doesn’t have the same standing as an official, national day of observance like Flag Day, Parents’ Day, Leif Erickson Day and 141 other commemorative days marked by the federal government. Tarrant County Commissioner Roy Brooks joined Lee for a sendoff at Baker Chapel A-M-E Church in East Fort Worth. He said the day’s historical significance cannot be understated.“There is no other celebration that observes the fact that black folks were freed at some point,” he said.Lee hopes the walk will also help generate signatures for her whitehouse.gov petition – 100,000 signatures guarantees a response by the Obama administration.Lee plans to take the 1,400-mile journey in daily, ten-mile increments. She hopes that’ll get her to the nation’s capital before President Obama leaves office. That is, if he doesn’t call sooner and tell her to get on a plane.Copyright 2016 KERA-FM. Community Associations Are Gems in the Midst of Misery

first_imgBy Sean Yoes, Baltimore AFRO Editor, syoes@afro.comAfter torrential rains — the remnant of what was deadly Hurricane Florence — deluged Baltimore the morning of Sept. 18, the sun broke out just in time for members of the Matthew A. Henson Neighborhood Association to have their monthly meeting on the second Tuesday in September.I was honored when Marvin “Doc” Cheatham, the long-time civil rights leader and the group’s hard charging president invited me to speak to his members and share my book, Baltimore After Freddie Gray, at Matthew A. Henson Elementary School in the heart of Sandtown-Winchester, the community where Gray lived and died.Sean Yoes (Courtesy Photo)Although the sun shone brightly on that afternoon, the misery was manifest within that proud, yet besieged, neighborhood in West Baltimore. As Cheatham walked from his car to greet me outside of the school he announced, “We had a homicide this morning.”He revealed the grisly details that have become far too familiar to our communities; another young Black man was dead. This time it was a 25-year old, shot in the face at approximately 10:57 a.m., the ninth murder in Sandtown-Winchester this year according to Cheatham, one homicide a month. As we entered the immaculately kept elementary school, the jugs of water neatly stacked along the walls reminded me our babies can’t drink from the poisonous water fountains, because they are laced with lead.As the members of the Henson Neighborhood Association began to trickle in, the essential paradox of Black Baltimore, and specifically neighborhoods like Sandtown-Winchester emerged. Cheatham explained to the group assembled — a mix of retired elders, middle-aged working class residents, Asian businessmen, elementary and high school students — not only was a young man gunned down that morning, but just a few hours after his murder the corner where he died was occupied by drug dealers operating with impunity.Despite the madness, the long-time pillars of Sandtown-Winchester press forward in the face of pervasive violence, poverty and blight, which seems to encroach more and more on their neighborhoods and way of life every day.As Cheatham conducted the meeting with his signature mix of outrage over the plight of their community, and jovial pragmatism, politicians aspiring to local office in the upcoming midterms mingled with residents while quietly lobbying for votes. Their presence was an acknowledgement of the group’s influence and the individual members represented a pool of some of the most reliable voters in the city.To be clear, the Henson Neighborhood Association is one of the best organized, led by one of the most resilient presidents in the city, but it is not an anomaly. Dozens of these groups dot the city, the glue bonding infirm, yet undaunted, communities West to East. They have been in the trenches for decades, grassroots soldiers fighting block by block, sometimes house by house for the ability to live decently in the city they love. These neighborhood associations and the people who power them are rich resources of wisdom, who are most invested in this city; they aren’t going anywhere. The city’s leaders ignore them at the peril of the rest of us. Indeed, instead of ignore them City Hall should empower them and seek their guidance at every level.During our conversation that evening we delved into the Black community’s rich history, one of a vanguard civil rights community. Many of those assembled personally experienced that history and they cling to it as a road map that may lead their community to better days. Those better days often seem like they exist upon a distant star given the current plight of many of Baltimore’s mostly Black, mostly poor neighborhoods. Yet, the members of the Matthew A. Henson Neighborhood Association persist. As I left the elementary school, an elderly gentleman who told me earlier in the evening that he missed the AFRO First Edition radio show I once hosted on WEAA, said with resignation in his voice, “We’ll keep on fighting.”Sean Yoes is the AFRO’s Baltimore editor and the author of Baltimore After Freddie Gray: Real Stories From One of America’s Great Imperiled Cities.last_img read more
