Underwood took action last year, building her 2018 tour with an entirely female bill, saying it was her way of supporting women “who deserve to be there.” Perhaps her insight provides a glimpse”It’s good when women support women,” said Underwood. “One of the good things that has come out of these conversations has been the rallying that we’ve had for each other, behind each other. We all need more of that in our lives.”The Annenberg report on women in country concluded, “The most effective solution is for the industry to undertake a collective effort to address disparities,” and it continued to lay out recommendations for ways labels, terrestrial radio, advocacy groups, streaming services and live entertainment professionals can take action. You can read the full report here.Closing The Gap: How Latina Artists Are Combating Gender Inequality In Urban MusicRead more News Facebook Report: Women Are Missing In Country Music report-women-artists-songwriters-are-missing-country-music Email The study examines 500 songs on the Year-End Billboard Hot Country charts over the past four years. Perhaps most concerning is that, while 2018’s number, 19 percent, was higher than 2014 and 2017, it was equal to 2016, indicating the situation is not necessarily improving.Percentages of women songwriters on the country charts were equally bleak. When analyzing 200 country songs from the same four-year span, the study found only 12 percent of top-charting country songs were written by women, this compared to 14 percent on the pop charts.Another alarming statistic the study revealed states the average age of top male artists is 42, while the average age of top female artists is 29. “Women are not only disadvantaged in the country market,” the study reads, “But their age illuminates a sell by date that their male counterparts do not experience.”The problem has received increased attention recently. Just last year, GRAMMY winner Carrie Underwood spoke out specifically against the gender gap in country radio. In an interview with Elaina Smith on Nash Country Daily’s “Women Want To Hear Women” podcast, Underwood pointed out the lack of women on country radio has only gotten worse, saying, “Even when I was growing up, I wished there was more women on the radio, you know. And I had a lot more that there are today.”First-time GRAMMY nominee this year Ashley McBryde echoed Underwood’s reflection, saying, “You look at the ’90s, they’re were as many if not more strong female artists as there were strong male artist, and they all got along. Nobody was bitching about one another. I think that’s the wrong way to go. Country music is a big-ass place. There’s room for all of us.”Underwood and McBryde are correct. A 2016 report by Stanford University researcher Devarati Ghosh confirmed that major labels have brought fewer female artists to radio in the 2000s compared to the mid-’90s. In 2017 a report by the Tennessean found the percentage of female-only country songs on the radio has indeed dropped since 2016.The USC Annenberg study follows their 2018 report on gender imbalance in recording studios, which stated just 2 percent of producers and 3 percent of engineers/mixers are women. The Recording Academy Task Force on Inclusion and Diversity have since launched the Producer and Engineer Inclusion Initiative aimed at course correcting the gender imbalance.Modern country trailblazer Kacey Musgraves, whose 2018 album Golden Hour took home the GRAMMY for Album Of The Year plus three more awards in country categories earlier this year at the 61st GRAMMY Awards, addressed gender gap in country in an interview with Billboard last year. Musgraves, who has expressed her vision for moving past the age-old gender barriers in country music.”I’m hoping we can get back to a musical world where talent and uniqueness got you further than politics,” Musgraves said, “Where the quality of a song was what would make you a household name. Can you imagine what that landscape could sound like? What future generations it could inspire?” A new study on the genre’s recent hits quantifies the drastic underrepresentation of female performers and songwriters on the charts and also shows gender imbalance in career longevity Nate HertweckGRAMMYs Apr 8, 2019 – 1:30 pm The picture of female underrepresentation in country music continues to become clearer, as a new study conducted by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative finds only 16 percent of the top charting country songs from 2015-2018 were performed by female artists. Premium channel subscriptions are Roku’s latest way to broaden itself. Roku Roku, the set-top streaming box maker, is breaking out of the living room for the first time with a service that offers paid premium channels like Showtime and Starz that you can also watch on your phone. On Wednesday, Roku unveiled Premium Subscriptions, which will launch late this month in a phased rollout. The idea is similar to Amazon Prime Video Channels — a place where you can buy add-on video subscriptions that let you cobble together a sort of personal bundle of internet-delivered TV with one-click purchases. Downsides to Roku’s version? It has fewer channels to choose from at a launch. (HBO is notably absent.) And subscribing via Roku won’t unlock your channels’ dedicated apps. So don’t expect to watch shows and movies in the Starz app via Roku even if you pay for Starz through Roku. The Roku Channel is the only place you can watch them. Tags Still, this marks Roku’s addition of mobile viewing for the first time, after its lifetime locked in the living room. Roku’s iOS and Android apps will be able to stream shows and movies for the first time. Until now, the Roku app served mostly as a second remote when paired to a powered-on Roku streaming device. But soon the Roku Channel, including any of your subscriptions, will be available on its mobile app in the US. Users will also be able to start a video on a Roku player or Roku TV and pick up from where they left off while on the go. Roku’s Premiere Plus is one of seven streaming devices in the company’s lineup. Sarah Tew/CNET It’s Roku’s latest expansion beyond set-top boxes. Though the company’s bread-and-butter business is its popular streaming devices, Roku has been reaching into other businesses. It’s booking more advertising revenue through services like the Roku Channel with its ad-supported movies, news and sports, for example. The Amazon video channels model is a ripe target. Amazon is quiet about how the program is faring because Amazon is quiet about everything, but one analyst estimates Amazon is one of the main ways that cordcutters are signing up for paid video subscriptions. Nearly half of Starz’s direct-to-consumer subscribers may be coming from Amazon, according to BMO analyst Daniel Salmon, and HBO and Showtime may be sourcing about a third of their digital subscribers there. (Editors’ note: Showtime is owned by CBS, the parent company of CNET.)Roku versus AmazonThere are significant differences between Roku’s new offering and Amazon’s video channels. For one, you won’t be able to unlock the dedicated apps of services that you subscribe to via Roku, a function known as authentication. Amazon added the ability to authenticate into some of those dedicated apps last year. Until this year, Roku’s mobile app mostly functioned as a second remote for its streaming devices. Sarah Tew/CNET The selection of channels is also slimmer. At launch, Roku is offering more than 25 subscriptions, while Amazon has accumulated more than 100. And Roku didn’t list some high-profile options, like HBO or PBS Kids, among the options it will have at launch. (Neither Amazon nor Roku offer Netflix, the most popular streaming network in the world.)It’s also unclear just how “one click” Roku signups will be. Amazon Prime Video Channels is based on the premise that you’re already a paying Amazon Prime member, so the company has your credit card details all set up. Roku has credit cards details for the majority of its accounts but not all, Rob Holmes, Roku’s vice president of programming and engagement, said in an interview last month. (Roku declined to further clarify the proportion of its monthly active accounts that have credit cards on file.) That leaves a portion of Roku users facing the hassle of tapping in new payment information in order to sign up for subscriptions they can get elsewhere. But like Amazon Prime Video Channels, Roku’s new Premium Subscriptions give you a one-stop hub for your subscriptions paid for with a single monthly bill. People can sign up for seven-day free trials (or longer) using their existing Roku account information. With Premium subscriptions, Roku users will be able to browse their channel’s entire catalogs. Search within the Roku Channel will be expanded, allowing people to search for keywords within the channel. ICICI Bank, Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ICICI BankReutersThe chief of ICICI Bank, the country’s largest private-sector lender, is facing speculation about nepotism and corruption over loans to the Dhoot family-promoted Videocon. While the board of the lender has come out in support of bank’s MD & CEO Chanda Kochhar, concerns still linger.Let’s take a look at the entire controversy surrounding the bank. What’s the issue all about? The issue dates back to 2008 when Videocon’s founder Venugopal Dhoot decided to start a company with Deepak Kochhar, husband of Chanda Kochhar, and two of her relatives.Dhoot held 50 percent stake in the new company, called NuPower Renewables, while Kocchar and her family held the other half.In March 2010, NuPower got a loan of Rs 64 crore from a company called Supreme Energy, owned by Dhoot and then transferred the latter’s ownership to a trust headed by Deepak Kochhar for just Rs 9 lakh, according to The Indian Express. So is there a conflict of interest? The questions of propriety and conflict of interest are being raised as the transfer of the company to Deepak Kochchar happened six months after the Videocon got a loan of Rs 3,250 crore from ICICI Bank, the report by The Indian Express claims.Almost 86 percent of that loan remains unpaid and Videocon account was declared a non-performing asset in 2017.What is ICICI Bank saying?”The board desires to clarify that none of the investors of NuPower Renewables are borrowers of ICICI Bank,” it said in a statement. The lender was one among a consortium of banks that gave loans to Videocon.”ICICI Bank was not the lead bank for this consortium and the bank only sanctioned its share of facilities aggregating approximately Rs 3,250 crore, which was less than 10 percent of the total consortium facility in April 2012,” the bank said.”The board concluded that there is no question or scope of any favoritism, nepotism or quid pro quo.”When International Business Times asked ICICI Bank to respond to media reports, the lender did not comment beyond what it had already stated in its Wednesday’s statement.Full statement of ICICI BankHere is the full text of the ICICI Bank statement: There have been some malicious and unfounded rumours in the past few days casting insinuations on ICICI Bank Ltd. and its MD & CEO. Similar rumours had first surfaced in the mid-2016 and had been appropriately responded to. Nevertheless these have resurfaced in the recent past to malign the Bank.In that context, the Board of ICICI Bank today reviewed the internal processes of the Bank and also the details of the exposure to the Videocon group.1. The Board has noted that the Bank has a well-structured and standardised credit approval process, where multiple independent departments are involved in providing independent credit risk rating, doing credit appraisal, credit approvals and monitoring the proposals. The Bank’s credit approval authorisation framework is laid down by the Board of Directors. The larger exposures are approved by the Credit Committee of the Board. The majority of Credit Committee members are independent directors of the Bank. The Chairman of the Credit Committee, till as late as June 2015, was always a non-Executive Director. Based on the above, it can be concluded that there are adequate checks and balances in loan appraisal, rating and approval processes within the Bank, both from the control as well as from a governance perspective.Given this architecture, no individual employee, whatever may be his or her position, has the ability to influence the credit decision at the Bank.2. With regard to ICICI Bank’s current exposure to Videocon group, the Board also recorded that:In 2012, a consortium of over 20 banks and financial institutions sanctioned facilities to the Videocon group (Videocon Industries Ltd. and 12 of its subsidiaries/ associates as co-obligors) for a debt consolidation programme and for the group’s oil and gas capital expenditure programme aggregating approximately Rs. 40,000 crore.ICICI Bank’s current exposure to the Videocon group is part of this syndicated consortium arrangement.ICICI Bank was not the lead bank for this consortium and the Bank only sanctioned its share of facilities aggregating approximately Rs. 3250 crore which was less than 10% of the total consortium facility in April 2012.After the preparation of the Information Memorandum and the initial due diligence for the financing programme by the lead arrangers and after the sanction of the facilities by the lead bank, the Credit Committee of ICICI Bank in 2012 sanctioned its share of facilities in the syndicated arrangement to the Videocon group. This Committee was chaired by the then Chairman of ICICI Bank and it included independent and working Directors of the Bank. It is important to note that Ms. Chanda Kochhar was not the Chairperson of this Committee. The Terms and Conditions offered for these loans are similar to those offered by the other banks in the consortium, ruling out the possibility of any special benefit to the borrower by ICICI Bank.It is important to note here that all banks including ICICI Bank disbursed the Rupee Term Loan into the common escrow pool account being maintained for this purpose by the lead bank.ICICI Bank’s share of the banking sector’s exposure to the Videocon group was less than 10% while around 90% of the loans were sanctioned by other banks and financial institutions. Hence the Board concluded that there is no question or scope of any favouritism, nepotism or quid-pro-quo.3. The Bank desires to clarify that none of the investors of NuPower Renewables are borrowers of ICICI Bank.4. ICICI Bank is regulated and supervised by various regulatory bodies and authorities. In that context the Bank receives various queries from time to time which are appropriately responded to.On looking at all the above facts, the Board has come to the conclusion that there is no question of any quid pro quo/ nepotism/ conflict of interest as is being alleged in various rumours. The Board has full confidence and reposes full faith in the Bank’s MD & CEO, Ms. Chanda Kochhar. The Board also commends the entire management team under the leadership of the MD & CEO for their hard work and dedication. We would urge you not to be misled by these rumours which are being spread to malign the Bank and its top management. So was Chanda Kocchar not involved in sanctioning loan to Videocon? It’s still not clear but according to the bank, KV Kamath was part of the credit committee that sanctioned the loan.”This committee was chaired by the then chairman of ICICI Bank and it included independent and working directors of the bank. It is important to note that Chanda Kochhar was not the chairperson of this committee,” the bank said.
Liquor ban imposed in Mathura Budweiser’s parent company has a $7 billion beer market, making it the second-largest brewery seller contributing about 17.5 percent in the market share. Facebook/ BudweiserBudweiser has been banned in Delhi for three years over allegations of tax evasion. The decision was taken after the state government completed a thorough investigation of beer maker SABMiller. The investigation put forward observations where the company was found guilty of using duplicate barcodes on the bottles allowing the company to pay lower levies. AB InBev has denied all the allegations and claimed that it would appeal against the ban, Reuters reported. The order also called for the sealing of two Ab InBev warehouses in Delhi which was completed on Tuesday. The company has been barred from selling fresh stock in the market. [Representational image]Creative Commons.AB InBev countered the government’s decision by stating that the allegations were related to SABMiller prior to its takeover and claimed for a fair hearing after allowing the company to present its views in full cooperation with the excise appellate process. An investigation brought out observations that there were bottles with the same barcode at a bar. However, the brewer argued the allegations quoting technical and clerical error in the barcode system. The government stated that it was reasonable to believe that the barcode tampering was a way of selling non-duty paid liquor. Antonio GuterresUnited Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will publicly brief the Security Council on Thursday on violence in Myanmar, which he has described as ethnic cleansing, after seven countries on the 15-member body requested the meeting.Sweden, the United States, Britain, France, Egypt, Senegal, and Kazakhstan requested the meeting. In preparation for Thursday’s public meeting, the council will be briefed behind closed doors on Tuesday by U.N. political affairs chief Jeffrey Feltman, diplomats said. Some 436,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar since Aug. 25, when attacks by Rohingya militants triggered a military crackdown.U.S. President Donald Trump wants the U.N. Security Council to take “strong and swift action” to end the violence, Vice President Mike Pence said last Wednesday. The council has already met twice behind closed doors since the Rohingya crisis began and earlier this month issued an informal statement to the press condemning the situation and urging Myanmar authorities to end the violence.Diplomats say the Security Council could consider adopting a formal statement if the situation does not improve, but China and Russia are unlikely to agree to stronger action that would require the adoption of a resolution they could veto.A Security Council resolution would need nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, Britain and France.Myanmar said earlier this month it was negotiating with veto powers China and Russia to ensure Myanmar would be protected from any Security Council action.

UK cable platform Virgin Media has launched a new games service that allows its subscribers to play games on the TV.The MSO, which was acquired by Liberty Global earlier this year, has teamed up with TV technology firm Two Way Media to roll out Play Games. The portal allows the 1.5 million Virgin subs with a TiVo settop to play casual games.Creators of casual games, meanwhile, are being encouraged by Virgin and Two Way to work to integrate, test, host, launch and monetise games on TiVo using its Two Way’s game framework, which it claims can make Flash games ready for the platform in under a week.Games available on the service now include Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and Scooby’s Creepy Cake Factory. Two Way Media chief executive James Turner said: “Virgin Media’s TiVo platform makes it very easy for their customers to find and play games, and their growing subscriber base provides an excellent opportunity for developers to generate meaningful revenues from their games.”
